It’s a pity, then, that out of the thousands upon thousands of words that his parents said to him, the only ones Harry will ever remember are their last. They weren’t even addressing their child, but the man who killed them and would eventually kill their son as well, however briefly. In a way, though, they were the most important words the Potters would ever say in front of Harry. After all, what else could they possibly have said that would express their love for him more?
Petunia, who was already ten weeks into her own pregnancy at the time, was put into a very bad mood. For three hours, the only words Vernon could get from her were, “Of bloody course she is.”

He told himself that James and Lily would ultimately have forgiven him because of that—after all, they had been working towards that goal themselves while they were alive.
It wasn’t until he saw Remus Lupin, looking completely alone and dejected, in that train compartment on the Hogwarts Express with Harry, Ron, and Hermione all those years later that he realized what a load of bollocks that was.
It was at that point that Lily finally gave up trying to make amends with her sister until they could leave the house in Godric’s Hollow and she could go see her alone.
They were reading Macbeth aloud in class, and Petunia had thrown a fit and started crying when she was assigned to read the lines of one of the witches, repeating “It’s not fair” over and over again.
James was going to be a star Chaser for a professional Quidditch team. Lily was going to take Slughorn up on his offer to get her a job as a Healer-in-Training at St. Mungo’s. Then James would say that she could be the Healer for his Quidditch team, and Lily would laugh and say that she would go insane if she had to see his Quidditch injuries all the time.
Then they would look at Harry and try to guess what he would be when he grew up. James insisted that he would be a Quidditch player as well, and Lily said that under no circumstance would she live with two Quidditch players, because then nothing else would ever be discussed and she wouldn’t get a word in edgewise. She liked to think he would get a job in the Ministry. James said that that was the most boring thing he could think of.
The one thing they agreed on was that they would be moving out of Godric’s Hollow as soon as they got the chance. As nice as it was, they needed to go somewhere—anywhere—else after being stuck inside that house for so long.
Unfortunately for James, these worked in a way he hadn’t expected: Sirius and Lily bonded by swapping embarrassing stories about him. They would eventually become very good friends, but James would never live down some of those stories.
